Role: Community Manager & Social Media Copywriter
Organization: Access2CS (EU Accessibility Project)
Institution: Technological University Dublin (Project Leader)
Platform: LinkedIn Community of Practice
Objective: Build and nurture a professional community focused on accessibility in higher education computer science
Access2CS is a pioneering EU-funded project dedicated to advancing accessibility in computer science education, with Technological University Dublin serving as the lead institution. As the community manager for our LinkedIn-based Community of Practice, I was tasked with creating engaging, inclusive content that would attract academic professionals while establishing clear community guidelines and fostering meaningful engagement.
The primary challenge was crafting copy that would:
Appeal to diverse academic professionals across Europe and beyond
Demonstrate accessibility best practices through the content itself
Encourage participation while setting professional standards
Balance welcoming tone with educational authority
I developed a comprehensive content strategy that included creating standardized copy templates for various post types (events, resources, teaching tips, guidelines) to ensure consistency across all community communications. This template-based approach empowers other contributors to maintain our community's voice and accessibility standards even when posting independently.
Opening Hook: "Welcome to Our Community of Practice in Higher Education Computer Science Accessibility!"
Uses inclusive language and immediately establishes the community's academic focus
Diamond bullet points (🔹) create visual hierarchy while remaining accessible
Value Proposition Structure:
Clear "Why are we here?" section that outlines tangible benefits
Checkmark emojis (✅) create scannable content that's also screen-reader friendly
Focuses on practical outcomes: resources, empowerment, collaboration, safe space
Community Building Elements:
"Our Vision" section establishes long-term goals and inclusive values
Direct call-to-action with specific conversation starters
Creates immediate engagement opportunity through introduction prompts
Accessibility Integration:
Includes explicit accessibility guidelines within the welcome message
Models best practices (alt text reminders, caption guidance, hashtag formatting)
Uses accessible language while avoiding ableist terminology
Strategic Hashtag Selection:
9 carefully chosen hashtags covering key themes: inclusion, accessibility, education, community
Uses camel case formatting (#AccessibleComputing) for screen reader compatibility
Balances broad reach (#EdTechForAll) with niche targeting (#TeachAccess)
This welcome post successfully established the community's professional tone while demonstrating our commitment to accessibility through practical application. The multi-layered approach—combining clear value propositions, engagement prompts, and embedded guidelines—created an efficient onboarding experience that both welcomes newcomers and educates them about accessibility best practices.
The template-driven approach I developed has enabled consistent, high-quality content across the community, ensuring that all posts maintain our accessibility standards regardless of the contributor.
